Description

When not in use, my yarn swift used to stand in a corner of my work room, propped against the wall and attracting dust. It wasn’t until a yarnie friend asked me to make her a storage bag for her swift that the idea occured to me that I could use one too! As is so frequently the way with me, when designing the pattern and making up the prototype that would become the bag for my swift, I did kind of over-engineer it… I interfaced it and added fusible fleece, as well as adding a shoulder strap and, when it was finished, photographed, filled with my swift and I was feeling delighted with myself, as I hung it on a hook on the back of the work room door, I realised that I really wouldn’t be going anywhere with it, so why had I added all that padding and the shoulder strap?!

I made a much simpler and serviceable bag for my yarnie friend and she was delighted with it. I then went on to tweak my design a bit and make the three bags you see in the photos here, using a really adorable Liberty lawn print called ‘Studio’ as a feature – it seemed like a really appropriate name for a fabric to be used to keep something in someone’s studio, plus it is covered in the cutest little dogs! I picked out three colourways of the print and partnered them up with toning cotton / linen blend solids for the rest of the outer of the bag and the drawstring casing. I then lined them with a traditional tough woven cotton ticking, perfect to hold a swift, which can be pretty heavy. The drawstring closes with a toning cotton cord and stopper and there’s a good sized fabric hanging loop on the back.

One thing I discovered when researching what size to make my bags and what the most common size of swift is, was that there isn’t really one common size, they vary massively! So for these three, I made these bags to hold a somewhat common size of 30″ / 76cm. The swift you see in the photos is mine, which is a Knitpicks one that’s 25″ long and I’m very happy to adjust the size of the bags and make you one to order, if your swift is a different size. Also, if you’re someone who WILL actually want to carry your swift around, I’d be happy to add padding and a shoulder strap too – just drop me a line to discuss!

IIf the colour you prefer isn’t available, please message me to see if I can obtain more of that fabric.
