Description

I’ve been making cosies for double points for a little while now and they really are one of the most useful things a knitter can have in their toolkit to make sure that what’s currently on the needles, stays on the needles! If you don’t know about these cosies, they’re a pretty simple construction that allows you to tuck up your work in progress with its needles before closing a couple of snaps and dropping your knitting into your workbag or basket, fully confident that those precious stitches won’t move. The middle size cosy for 20cm / 8″ needles will also work brilliantly for a long circular if you like to work magic loop – just ask me to add a 3rd snap so that you can secure the cord (see the last photo for an example of how this works in practise).

A quick look around the needle storage section of my shop will show you that I already offer quite a range of cosies in various fabrics for both 20 and 15cm double points and magic loop, but I’ve never offered cosies for long straight, 35cm regular knitting needles until a customer asked me to make them some and I thought they’d be a useful addition. You’ll also notice from the purse section in my shop that I’m a tweed lover and having bought a couple of new pieces of tweed I was impatient to stitch, it occurred to me that I should make a special set of cosies with them. I love the idea of using hand woven tweed for cosies – why wouldn’t you want to store your hand made woolly work in progress in hand woven and hand made woolly cosies?!

Both of the tweeds I used for these sets are woven by Joanne of Urgha Loom Shed using her Mark II Hattersley Loom in her workshop on the Isle of Harris. The bolder blue check tweed is woven from dyed and undyed British Breed wools and is made up of grey, brown and blue tones. The finer check is a Shetland Tweed, woven from yarn spun at a family run mill in the Shetland Isles – how perfect for Shetland knitting projects?

I’ve used a gorgeous golden shot silk to line both sets of cosies and I really like the combination of the tweed and the silk together – both so luxurious in very different ways. Both the tweed and the silk are interfaced with woven cotton to stabilise and strengthen the cloths and the outer then has a layer of fleece added for padding and protection. The finishing touch is the addition of gold coloured metal snap fastners.

At the moment, I’ve got just one set of each of these cosies available – one in each of the 3 sizes. If you’d like me to add a 3rd snap to the 20cm size cosy, just add a note to me when placing your order.
