Cats are not the easiest loved ones to buy for – most of them have a fairly limited range of interest that generally involves eating, sleeping, hunting / playing and hairball management. You might think that the humans the cats live with are easy to buy for because you can just buy them some cute kitty note cards or a book telling them everything they already know about cats but, au contraire! We cat carers are not always so keen on those cat themed gifts as you might think…

As a cat lover and slave myself for many years, I know that most cats love to exercise their hunting instincts through play with their human slaves, and many of them are encouraged to do this via the delights of catnip and toys that smell, feel and look like real prey, like feathers, for example.

This kind of play is healthy for kitty and strengthens the bonds between them and their human slaves, who will probably buy an inordinate number of garishly coloured cat toys from pet shops over the years, in an attempt to delight their felines. Invariably, kitty will reject many of the toys and instead select something random like a feather from the garden or a ball of expensive wool to roll around with and kick to pieces – I speak from personal experience. So why fight it? Why not avoid that basket full of garish rejected cat toys in the corner of the living room and give your cat a small selection of toys that they will want to play with and that will last? Or, if you’re buying for a cat lover (or new cat owner), don’t add to their already sad collection of cat themed books, notebooks or tea towels, buy them something that will give them and their cat hours of fun play and bonding time!

The catnip cuddle whale – machine stitched from strong woven cotton ticking with hand stitched detailing, stuffed with fire retardant high loft stuffing and a good dose of quality catnip, this will give kitty a whale of a time! It is the perfect size and shape for hugging to the tummy and biting and kicking with the back legs, whenever the urge arises, and is also a brilliant comfort toy for a kitten to curl up and sleep with. The sheepy ball – I’ve crocheted this ball using an undyed eco virgin wool and I’ve stuffed it with pure, soft carded wool and a handful of quality catnip. Although it does smell a bit sheepy from new, the wool is nice and soft and will felt a little over time becoming softer and a little bit fuzzier, but won’t shed onto the carpet. It has a circumference of 8.5 inches / 21.5cm and is the perfect size for rolling and wrestling. The colours are all natural cream, brown and grey shades and these will differ from box to box (if you have a very specific preference, let me know when ordering and I’ll try and oblige).

The feather fascinator – this will really exercise kitty’s prey drive as you flick the feather toy back and forth using the fishing rod handle and it twists and turns like a bird in flight! The feather toy is made by individually hand wrapping feathers onto a chenille covered pipe cleaner using super strong bonded nylon thread. I then cover the pipe cleaner base with a piece of foam covered with PVC tape and then a cover of fleece fabric, hand stitched into place with silk thread, to ensure that kitty’s mouth and paws won’t come into contact with the wire core. The feather toy is then attached to the dowel using a strong woven cord via a swivel clip and some nifty knots, which I cover in more duck tape to protect them. The feathers I use are very high quality pheasant feathers from a supplier in Scotland who also supplies milliners with these feathers for hats – only the best for kitty! I do recommend that you don’t allow kitty to play with this toy unsupervised – the micro cord is very strong, but won’t withstand those sharp kitty teeth when they’re in a determined mood and the feathers won’t survive prolonged chewing.
