Interchangeable needles bag with room for a set of interchangeable knitting needle tips, cables, accessories and even a roll of DPNs

For years, I had my set of interchangeable needle tips, cables and the bits that go with them, in the cheap and nasty flat plastic case they were in when I bought them. I finally decided that it was time to make a proper bag and get organised, which was where the original design for this bag came from. It took me a few attempts to get the bag exactly as I wanted it, with the right features in the right places and everything to the right dimensions, but I’m pretty confident now that my design will work for most knitters. I truthfully didn’t intend to be able to keep my roll of DPNs in that bag as well, but I figured that it was an awesome coincidence that they fit in there perfectly and, as I didn’t have a proper bag or case for those either, what a win!

I offer these bags in several different designs using great quality cotton prints, and linen and cotton solids for the interiors. This one is made with a print called “Garden of the Underworld’ by Cecilia Mok, which at first glance is a beautiful garden of flowers filled with colourful, fluttering moths, but it is deceptive – the flowers are all dangerous blooms – foxglove, hemlock, lily of the valley, oleander, yarrow, alstroemeria and deadly nightshade. I’ve used an Essex metallic linen called ‘Celestial’ with the print, which has multi coloured metallic threads against black, giving a magical and sparkling overall green cast.

The outer and linings are interfaced with woven cotton for strength and longevity and the outer also has a layer of fleece to add structure and some protection for the contents. The slip pockets and zip pocket are made with a coordinating green coloured cotton.

The bag has 2 sets of slip pockets for needle tips – one on each side. One of them is 2.5″ / 6.25cm tall and the other is 3.5″ / 9cm, which is perfect for both short and longer tips. Each pocket has 11 slots – 6 for the slimmer tips, 5 for the fatter ones and, finally, a larger slot that you can use for your really chubby tips, or maybe for other notions or tools you like to keep together with your tips. On the side with the shorter pocket, there’s also a generously sized zip pocket, perfect for keys, connectors and end caps to be tucked away safely. ** Please note that the height of the bag allows for storage of standard length tips of 4.5”. If your tips are longer please send me a custom request and I’ll make a taller bag for you. **

You can see the dimensions of the bag in last photo. My roll of DPNs measures 8.5″ / 22cm in length and the same in circumference, which will give you a good idea of whether yours will fit into the bag as well as your interchangeables. I’ve added the main zip on top in a way that means that the bag opens right up to allow you easy access to the contents – do be aware though that this creates small openings at each side of the zip, as you can see in the photos. Finally, I’ve added a fabric loop to the outer in case you want to add a wristlet strap, and there’s another one inside the bag, which you may find useful to clip things to that you don’t want to slosh around inside.

As with all my pieces, I’m happy to make you a bag in the fabrics of your choice, as long as they’re available.
